The basics

The Vietnam e-visa is an electronic visa issued by the Immigration Department of the Ministry of Public Security. Official sources indicate it can be single or multiple entry. Entry remains at the discretion of the immigration officer.

Validity
Maximum of 90 days, single or multiple entry. The e-visa validity must be at least 30 days shorter than the passport validity.
Stay per entry
Official sources state a maximum validity of 90 days. The validity granted on the e-visa determines the permitted stay.
Where you apply
Online, through the official e-visa portals evisa.gov.vn or evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn
Fee
25 USD for single entry, 50 USD for multiple entry. Non-refundable if the visa is not granted.

Who it's for

Official sources indicate the e-visa is for foreigners who are outside Vietnam, hold a valid passport or international travel document, and do not fall under the entry prohibition cases in Article 21 of the Law on foreigners' entry, exit, transit and residence in Vietnam. Rules vary by nationality, and sources reviewed do not confirm eligibility or exemptions for any specific passport.

Foreigners covered by Clauses 1, 2, 3 and 4 of Article 8 of the same law cannot apply on the e-visa website. The official page lists categories such as senior state and party delegations and members of diplomatic missions, consular offices and certain international organizations. These applicants go through an inviting or guaranteeing agency or organization to the competent agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The e-visa is not available to foreigners currently residing in Vietnam. Official FAQs say a person may request one after leaving Vietnam.

  • Foreigners working in Vietnam must have a work permit or a confirmation that none is required, according to the official FAQ.

How to apply

Official sources direct applicants to the government portals. The Immigration Department notice dated 11/11/2024 says the portal moved to new domains, so confirm the active address on immigration.gov.vn. The official FAQ warns that unofficial sites may charge unauthorized fees.

  • Open an official portal: evisa.gov.vn or evisa.xuatnhapcanh.gov.vn.
  • Fill out the application form accurately, in English. Enter your full name as it appears on the ICAO line of your passport, in uppercase.
  • Upload a portrait photo and a photo of the passport information page.
  • Pay the fee through the portal's e-payment gateway.
  • Receive the result by email or on the e-visa portal.
  • The official FAQ says you may apply up to 1 year before planned entry.
  • The Immigration Department recommends completing the pre-arrival form at prearrival.immigration.gov.vn before entering Vietnam.

Documents

  • Valid passport or international travel document, held by a foreigner applying from outside Vietnam.
  • An approved e-visa.
  • Not falling under the entry prohibition cases in Article 21 of the law. These include forged documents or false information, deportation within 3 years, and children under 14 not accompanied by parents, guardians or authorized persons.
  • Complete, accurate and truthful information on the form. Official sources say applications with dishonest information may be denied, including failing to disclose past violation history.
  • Entry and exit through the international border gates designated by the Government and listed on the official portal. Official FAQs say you do not have to exit through the same gate you entered.
  • Declaration of temporary residence through the accommodation establishment, and again each time you change your temporary residence location.

Stay and extensions

Official sources state the e-visa is valid for a maximum of 90 days. Sources reviewed do not describe extension rules for e-visa holders, so extension terms are not confirmed.

Official pages state that e-visa holders in Vietnam may be considered for a new visa if invited or guaranteed by an authority, organization or individual in Vietnam, in accordance with the law.
